Hewlett-Packard Co. is going head to head against Sun Microsystems Inc. by introducing a lightweight Java Virtual Machine.

Today they announced it has created a lighter-weight Java virtual machine aimed towards the handheld and embedded systems markets.

HP also announced that one of its biggest licensees is none other than Microsoft, which is licensing the technology for use in its Windows CE operating system. It is rumored that they may also use the technology in its WebTV architecture.
